It allows to connect the Game Boy Classic with later Game Boy models (Game Boy Color and Game Boy Pocket) and other hardware. Compared to Nintendo's Game Link Cable, which needed an additional adapter (DMG-14) to connect the Game Boy Classic with other models, the "Dual Link X Cable" provides this feature natively.
